Alan Russell
Vice President, Research & Head, R&D Technology & Innovation Amgen
Dr. Alan Russell (Ph.D., Imperial College) is Vice President of Research, Large Molecule Discovery, and Head of R&D Technology & Innovation at Amgen. He leads global teams advancing large-molecule therapeutics and R&D innovation, while fostering talent, safety, inclusion, and career development.
Previously, he was the Highmark Distinguished Career Professor of Chemical Engineering and Director of the Disruptive Health Technology Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. He also served as Executive Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer of Allegheny Health Network and founded or led several biotechnology companies.
Dr. Russell founded the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and served on the FDA Science Board for a decade. His work spans polymers, tissue engineering, and homeland defense, earning a U.S. Army “Greatest Invention” award. He has delivered more than 500 invited lectures, published over 250 peer-reviewed papers cited more than 20,000 times, and holds dozens of U.S. and international patents.
